When I was young, I worked my butt off trying to get ahead. I tried to sell all kinds of stuff, bothering people at their homes and businesses, in person, and on the phone. I didn’t like it, and I wasn’t very good at it, but I wanted to make money. I was doing what I thought I had to do.
If you know anything about my story, you know where it got me— broke and moving back in with my parents at the age of 30.
I made a lot of changes to get where I am today, but there’s one specific change that I believe made everything possible. Would you like to know what it is?
It was the decision to stop living from my head and start living from my heart.
If you get this— I mean really get it— it will completely change your life. It changes the rules you play by, the lens through which you view the world, and the driving force behind your decisions and actions.
The head is all about ego. Me me me. All those years of hustling, I was focused on petty desires and misguided strategies to fulfill them. I thought I was being practical and realistic.
I had convinced myself I should do things I didn’t want to do and care about things I didn’t care about.
I wouldn’t listen to anyone, not even myself. I was ignoring my true feelings and desires. I was dreaming small dreams, and I wasn’t even achieving those.
When I started learning to live from my heart, all of that began to change.
Living from your heart means leading a spiritual, abundant life vs. an ego-based life.
It means coming from a place of service, kindness, and love. It means tapping into creativity and inspiration to do things that really make you feel alive.
And counter to what most people think, money comes naturally as a result.
There’s a common misconception that if you live from your heart, you’re going to get stepped on by everybody. You’re going to be a pushover. You’re never going to get anything done. You’re never going to make any money, and you’re never going to be successful.
That’s how a lot of the world lives.
Of course, you need your head too, to make sure you don’t fall in a hole, get jerked around, or do something stupid. But your head should be supporting your heart.
A lot of people have that backwards, living from their ego mind with maybe a little bit of input from their heart. Or worse, they leave out heart altogether.
Well, I can only speak from my own experience, but I think that way of living is freakin’ insane!
The day I started living from my heart is the day I started getting rich, period.
This isn’t some airy-fairy idea I made up. It’s how I’ve been able to achieve the level of success and wealth that I’m so grateful for today.
It’s how we still do things at Harv Eker International, and it’s why we continue to achieve massive growth year after year.
Why Living From Your Head Will Keep You Stuck
If you’re living from your head, you’re living from fear because your mind’s job is protection. And with good reason— it’s evolved over hundreds of thousands of years to keep you alive.
This was super important when we lived in caves and had to avoid getting eaten by saber-toothed tigers or killed by competing tribes.
Your ego mind is still important today, however, to keep you from doing things that are actually dangerous, like walking out in front of a bus.
But since you’re reading this lesson right now, chances are you’re not facing life-or-death threats every day.
When people let protectiveness run their life, they limit themselves, choking off their own potential.
They don’t let themselves create big visions for their life. They don’t take big, bold action.
They focus on small, “reasonable” improvements, and they treat minor details like major priorities.
They tend to focus on their own needs and desires rather than helping others.
Ultimately, living in the ego, fear-based self can shrink a person’s life and keep them from ever reaching their potential.
How Living From Your Heart Can Make You Rich And Happy
When we live from our heart, on the other hand, we become much more attractive to people and opportunities.
It’s a scientific fact that everything is energy. We all send and receive energetic messages all day every day. That’s why people can often get intuitive feelings of attraction or repulsion about others.
I know this might sound a little woo-woo, but I don’t care about how it sounds. I care about what works in the real world!
So, where does all your money come from? If you said other people, you are absolutely correct! They give you money when they believe you’re helping them in some way.
If we focus on how to 2x or 3x or 4x the number of people we’re helping, or the level at which we’re helping them, do you think they might feel and appreciate that?
Might they feel happy about handing you money? And might that in turn make you happier?
I can tell you from my experience, the answer to all the above is a HUGE YES!
How To Start Living From Your Heart
Now, you might be thinking, “That’s nice, Harv. But what the heck do I do with this information?”
Well, here’s the tricky part. Even though we’re talking about living from your heart, there’s nothing in your life that doesn’t begin in your mind.
You are where you’re at because of the thoughts you’ve had and the decisions that you’ve made in the past. And you’ll be where you’re at tomorrow based on your thoughts and decisions today.
So the first thing is to start with intention. I want you to say this out loud three times, “My intention is to live from my heart and be supported by my head.” Write it down and post it somewhere you’ll see it all the time. Repeat it as often as possible.
This is the beginning of positive change.
Next, ask yourself, “What does it look like to live from my heart?” It’s going to be a little different for every person.
Take some time to create a vision board or journal about what a heart-centered life could mean for you— the things and people and experiences that make you feel most joyfully alive.
On the flip side, practice expressing appreciation both to yourself and to those around you for what you already have.
Then take action.
Maybe you start meditating or you take up a spiritual practice. Maybe you start scheduling time for a passion you’ve been neglecting.
You might look for ways to be of service and contribute to others’ lives, doing small acts of kindness wherever you go or BIG acts of kindness!
Whatever actions you take, living from heart always begins and ends with your intention to do so.
As you keep returning to that intention, over and over and over, it gets stronger and stronger, and the results get better and better.
Bottom line is this: If you keep thinking the way you’ve always thought, you’ll keep doing what you’ve always done, and you’ll keep getting the results you’ve always got.
So I encourage you to take these ideas seriously and act on them. There’s no step-by-step method, but there are a lot of principles and tools that can help you along the way.
